In the festival’s opening concert, the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra will appear with the world famous Italian cellist and composer, Giovanni Sollima. A supervirtuoso of the cello, he does not however consider playing an end in itself but rather a means of communicating with the world. He is also a composer out of the ordinary, contributing significantly to the creation of new repertoire for his instrument. His exploratory work blazes a trail for new horizons, straddling different genres and creating a space for new sounds which gratifies both classical music lovers and young ‘metalheads.’

This concert will feature as much as three compositions by Sollima, including When We Were Trees that has been recorded with another soloist in the programme, renowned Croatian cellist Monika Leskovar. A prize-winner of many international competitions, she collaborates regularly with major European orchestras, conductors, and composers.
